Elements of a Paint Scheme

Every Paint Scheme has 4 basic parts, or elements, to it. They are:
  • BASE PAINT SCHEME - This is the heart and soul of a paint scheme. The underlying paint scheme is where you lay the foundation for the rest of the car. What you do with the base paint has a huge effect on what you use for colors, how you arrange the rest of the objects, and also is what really catches peoples' eyes. Before painting a car, most of the time you should already know what the sponsor is going to be, that way you can use colors that compliment those in the sponsor's logo.
  • SPONSOR LOGOS - This is where you make your money. ;) Putting the sponsor on the car is what brings in the cash for racing teams. The better you do it, the more people will pay attention and take notice of your sponsor, and the more money you can suck out of them. ;) There are basically two kinds of sponsor logos: Graphical logos and Text Logos. Graphical logos are what's almost always used on the hood of the car. It has some cool lookin' shapes and things along and around the name of the sponsor. A text logo is basically just text of the name of the sponsor, and is usually used on the rear 1/4 panels and back panel of the car. For instance, Bobby Labonte's car has an Interstate Graphical logo on the hood, and Text logos on the rear 1/4 panels. Take a look:

  • NUMBERS - The numbers on a car can sometimes be the toughest part. I use the Text tool in Paint Shop Pro to make my numbers (we'll talk about how to do that later) and that allows me to use any font I have on my system as a possible number style. I have about 500 fonts that I've downloaded, gotten from collections, or bummed off of friends. ;) The more you have the more options will be available to you for numbers.
  • THE EXTRAS - This is all the little crap (read: details) that put the finishing touches on a car. I lump a lot of things into this category. Headlights, front scoops, front bumper and door decals (those little decals that are PAIN to put on), gas caps, spoiler brackets, and the list goes on...
I'm going to teach you how to create or import each of those elements later on. They are the 4 basic parts of a car, and I work on one at a time, and in that order. Things are going to get a little complicated at times from here on out. But if you keep in mind that all the complexity is basically just trying to create each one of these 4 basic elements, you'll do just fine. ;)

Right now I want to share with you my theory on how these elements should (and shouldn't) be put together to make a great car. CLICK HERE to find out 'FREEZ's Advanced Theory of Car Painting'.
